Tobacco

Tobacco leaves, cut tobacco and paper are all very hygroscopic which means that they release their moisture to the surrounding environment if the air is too dry – Equilibrium.

An ambient RH of 60-68% is needed to maintain equilibrium between the air and the moisture of the tobacco.
Cigarette paper must also be kept in equilibrium with the environment. If the moisture changes so will the dimensions of the reel of the paper. This will only occur along the exposed edges, creating tension as the paper runs, which leads to paper tearing, machine misfeeds and expensive downtime re-feeding the roll. The recommended level of RH is 60%.
